The traditional Turkish villages of Uzumlu (grape village) and Incirkoy (fig village) are situated at opposite ends of a fertile plateau. They nestle beneath pine-clad mountains below the ancient Lycean city of Cadianda which has spectacular views of Fethiye Bay.
Uzumlu with its authentic Ottoman houses is only about 10 miles from Fethiye but is completely different in character. Here many local people live a simple lifestyle, making a living from the land. Local produce includes wine, grape juice, olives and olive oil, vinegar, figs and the traditional Dastar cotton cloth that is still woven on looms by villagers in their homes and from which scarves, tablecloths and curtains are made. The almond groves in blossom are spectacular in the spring.
For anyone who would prefer a home in a more tranquil setting, away from and yet still within easy access to the coast, there are a number of sympathetic new developments on the outskirts of Uzumlu.
